NAVPA and Kognito have partnered to promote Kognito’s innovative Veterans on Campus suite of role-play simulations, featuring emotionally-responsive virtual student Veterans, for faculty, staff, and peers to build military cultural competency on campuses nationwide. The two simulation programs–a professional development program for faculty and staff and a peer program for students–prepare educators and peers to effectively lead real-life conversations with student Veterans about challenges they may face as they transition to college life. NAVPA members receive a reduced price on the suite of Veterans on Campus programs as part of this valuable partnership.
In both simulations, the user role-play conversations with virtual student Veterans, practicing different conversation scenarios to learn how to best approach and talk with student Veterans.
A 2015 study, co-published by Dr. Chris A. Cate from Student Veterans of America and Kognito’s Co-Founder and Director of Research Dr. Glenn Albright, found that the Veterans on Campus conversations taken by faculty and staff resulted in statistically significant and sustainable changes in military cultural competency skills. Faculty and staff effectively learned how to approach and refer a Veteran struggling with psychological distress or with adjusting to college life to support services. Kognito’s Veterans on Campus simulations are listed in SAMSHA’s SPRC/AFSP Best Practices Registry and are currently being utilized by more than 110 higher education institutions.
